74. Al-Muddaththir

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ1

O you who covers himself [with a garment],

Yaaa ayyuhal muddassir

قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ2

Arise and warn

Qum fa anzir

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ3

And your Lord glorify

Wa rabbaka fakabbir

وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ4

And your clothing purify

Wa siyaabaka fatahhir

وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ5

And uncleanliness avoid

Warrujza fahjur

وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ6

And do not confer favor to acquire more

Wa laa tamnun tastaksir

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ7

But for your Lord be patient.

Wa li Rabbika fasbir

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى ٱلنَّاقُورِ8

And when the trumpet is blown,

Fa izaa nuqira fin naaqoor

فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ9

That Day will be a difficult day

Fazaalika yawma 'iziny yawmun 'aseer

عَلَى ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍۢ10

For the disbelievers - not easy.

'Alal kaafireena ghayru yaseer

ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًۭا11

Leave Me with the one I created alone

Zamee wa man khalaqtu waheedaa

وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًۭا مَّمْدُودًۭا12

And to whom I granted extensive wealth

Wa ja'altu lahoo maalam mamdoodaa

وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًۭا13

And children present [with him]

Wa baneena shuhoodaa

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًۭا14

And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].

Wa mahhattu lahoo tamheeda

ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ15

Then he desires that I should add more.

Summa yat ma'u an azeed

كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِءَايَٰتِنَا عَنِيدًۭا16

No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.

Kallaaa innahoo kaana li Aayaatinaa 'aneedaa

سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا17

I will cover him with arduous torment.

Sa urhiquhoo sa'oodaa

إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ18

Indeed, he thought and deliberated.

Innahoo fakkara wa qaddar

فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ19

So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

Faqutila kayfa qaddar

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ20

Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

Summa qutila kaifa qaddar

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ21

Then he considered [again];

Summa nazar

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ22

Then he frowned and scowled;

Summa 'abasa wa basar

ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ23

Then he turned back and was arrogant

Summaa adbara wastakbar

فَقَالَ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌۭ يُؤْثَرُ24

And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].

Faqaala in haazaaa illaa sihruny yu'sar

إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوْلُ ٱلْبَشَرِ25

This is not but the word of a human being."

In haazaaa illaa qawlul bashar

سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ26

I will drive him into Saqar.

Sa usleehi saqar

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ27

And what can make you know what is Saqar?

Wa maaa adraaka maa saqar

لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ28

It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],

Laa tubqee wa laa tazar

لَوَّاحَةٌۭ لِّلْبَشَرِ29

Blackening the skins.

Lawwaahatul lilbashar

عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ30

Over it are nineteen [angels].

'Alaihaa tis'ata 'ashar

وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَٰٓئِكَةًۭ ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةًۭ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَٰنًۭا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌۭ وَٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلًۭا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ31

And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is hypocrisy and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allah intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And mention of the Fire is not but a reminder to humanity.

Wa maaja''alnaaa As haaban naari illaa malaaa 'ikatanw wa maa ja'alnaa 'iddatahum illaa fitnatal lillazeena kafaroo liyastayqinal lazeena ootul kitaaba wa yazdaadal lazeena aamanooo eemaananw wa laa yartaabal lazeena ootul kitaaba walmu'minoona wa liyaqoolal lazeena fee quloo bihim maradunw walkaafiroona maazaaa araadal laahu bihaazaa masalaa; kazaalika yudillul laahu many yashaaa'u wa yahdee many yashaaa'; wa maa ya'lamu junooda rabbika illaa hoo; wa maa hiya illaa zikraa lil bashar

كَلَّا وَٱلْقَمَرِ32

No! By the moon

Kallaa walqamar

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ33

And [by] the night when it departs

Wallaili adbar

وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَآ أَسْفَرَ34

And [by] the morning when it brightens,

Wassub hi izaaa asfar

إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى ٱلْكُبَرِ35

Indeed, the Fire is of the greatest [afflictions]

Innahaa la ihdal kubar

نَذِيرًۭا لِّلْبَشَرِ36

As a warning to humanity -

Nazeeral lilbashar

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ37

To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind.

Liman shaaa'a minkum any yataqaddama aw yata akhkhar

كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ38

Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained

Kullu nafsim bim kasabat raheenah

إِلَّآ أَصْحَٰبَ ٱلْيَمِينِ39

Except the companions of the right,

Illaaa as haabal yameen

فِى جَنَّٰتٍۢ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ40

[Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other

Fee jannaatiny yata saaa'aloon

عَنِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ41

About the criminals,

'Anil mujrimeen

مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ42

[And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?"

Maa salakakum fee saqar

قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ43

They will say, "We were not of those who prayed,

Qaaloo lam naku minal musalleen

وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ ٱلْمِسْكِينَ44

Nor did we used to feed the poor.

Wa lam naku nut'imul miskeen

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ45

And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it],

Wa kunnaa nakhoodu ma'al khaaa'ideen

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ46

And we used to deny the Day of Recompense

Wa kunnaa nukazzibu bi yawmid Deen

حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلْيَقِينُ47

Until there came to us the certainty."

Hattaaa ataanal yaqeen

فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَٰعَةُ ٱلشَّٰفِعِينَ48

So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors.

Famaa tanfa'uhum shafaa'atush shaafi'een

فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ49

Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away

Famaa lahum 'anittazkirati mu'rideen

كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌۭ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌۭ50

As if they were alarmed donkeys

Ka annahum humurum mustanfirah

فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍۭ51

Fleeing from a lion?

Farrat min qaswarah

بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍۢ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًۭا مُّنَشَّرَةًۭ52

Rather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about.

Bal yureedu kullum ri'im minhum any yu'taa suhufam munashsharah

كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلْءَاخِرَةَ53

No! But they do not fear the Hereafter.

Kallaa bal laa yakhaafoonal aakhirah

كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذْكِرَةٌۭ54

No! Indeed, the Qur'an is a reminder

Kallaaa innahoo tazkirah

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ55

Then whoever wills will remember it.

Fa man shaaa'a zakarah

وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ56

And they will not remember except that Allah wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness.

Wa maa yazkuroona illaaa any yashaaa'al laah; Huwa ahlut taqwaa wa ahlul maghfirah
